SafeUnfollow vs followsback.com

Short version: these two tools work the same way — you download Instagram’s official export and upload the file, with no password and no account connection. Three things differ: followsback’s paid tier stops at 2,500 followers and renews weekly, SafeUnfollow’s analysis is free at any size with a one-time unlock only for the download, and SafeUnfollow’s client is open source, so its processing claim is one you can check rather than accept.

Prices, plan names and limits below were checked on followsback.com’s own pages on 2026-09-02. Prices change without notice — open their plan page before you decide.

Where The Two Actually Differ

Price shape, not price level

followsback’s Essential plan is $2.29 a week, which is $119.08 a year. SafeUnfollow charges once, for the download only, at a price set for your country and shown on the button before you pay. In most countries the weekly plan passes the one-time unlock within about three weeks, and every week after that widens the gap — while the unlock is already paid for.

That arithmetic matters less than the shape behind it. Their price is charged by time and capped by account size. Ours is charged by neither: a 400-account export and a 400,000-account export cost the same, and the analysis itself costs nothing at either size.

The 2,500-follower cap

Essential stops at 2,500 followers. That is the number worth checking against your own account before anything else on this page, because above it the comparison stops being about price.

SafeUnfollow has no account-size limit. It stores usernames in packed columns and filters with bitsets, and it is built and unit-tested for over 1,000,000 accounts.

Whether you can check the claim, or only read it

followsback says processing happens on your own device. So do we, in almost the same words. Neither claim can be verified from the outside by a visitor — and only one of the two can be verified at all: SafeUnfollow’s client is published under the MIT license, so the code that touches your export is code you or anyone else can read. followsback does not publish its source.

This is the difference we would ask you to weigh, because it is the only one on this page that does not depend on trusting either of us. If you want to run the check yourself rather than take it on faith, here is how to check any tracker in two minutes.

Where followsback Is The Better Choice

Honest answer: in three situations.

Where SafeUnfollow Is The Better Choice

Switching Takes No Migration

There is nothing to move. Both tools read the same thing: the ZIP that Instagram gives you from Settings › Accounts Centre › Your information and permissions › Download your information, in JSON format, over All time.

If you already downloaded that export for followsback, it works here as-is. If you have not, the guide below walks through the request, which Instagram usually fulfils within minutes to a few hours.

Common Questions

Does SafeUnfollow need my Instagram password? No. It reads the export file Instagram gives you. There is no login step, no account connection, and nothing to revoke afterwards.

Is the analysis really free at any account size? Yes. Every badge, every filter and the complete list are free whatever the export contains. The one paid extra is a one-time unlock for downloading that list as a file, and the download shows you a free sample first.

Can I use the same export file with both? Yes. Both accept Instagram’s official JSON export, so one download serves both.

Try It

Upload your export — the analysis runs in your browser and the file stays on your device.

Not ready? Try it with sample data — nothing to upload. Or get your export first — step-by-step.
